Big Wide Wheels on Not-So-Wide Tires

We see it every day: 12″ and 14″ wide wheels on 12.50-wide tires. Stretching a tire until the wheel lip sticks out past the sidewall can create problems quickly. It may be popular, but it is not always the best idea.

This is not meant to talk you out of the look. It is meant to give you a few things to consider before you choose a wide-wheel, narrow-tire combination.

What to consider before stretching a tire

  1. Wheel Damage – A tire sidewall is built to take a reasonable impact from curbs, trees, potholes, and similar obstacles. A wheel is not. When the wheel lip extends past the tire sidewall, an impact is much more likely to damage the wheel.
  2. Handling – Super-wide wheels can cause vibrations, steering issues, and handling problems regardless of tire size. If your truck has IFS (independent front suspension), the problems can be amplified. Balancing the tires repeatedly will not correct issues created by hanging the tire-and-wheel weight farther out from a suspension designed to carry that weight closer under the truck.
  3. Warranty – Installing a tire on a wheel wider than the manufacturer-recommended range can void warranty coverage for many tire issues.
  4. Wear – Tires mounted on wheels that are too wide may not wear correctly. A stretched tire can wear the outer edges before the center, leading to cupping, cracked outer lugs, and chunking — especially with mud-terrain tires. Tie rods, drag links, bearings, and other suspension components can also experience premature wear because of the additional leverage and weight.
  5. Safety – A stretched tire has a greater chance of popping off the wheel. Most wheels include safety beads, but they are not designed to secure a tire bead at the extreme angles created by a wide wheel and narrow tire. Bead chafing and bead slipping can occur.
  6. Load Capacity – A tire sidewall and tread are designed to carry a specified amount of weight only when mounted on a recommended wheel width. Mounting the tire at an extreme angle changes the sidewall profile, stresses the bead, and can build excessive heat in the sidewall area.

There are many more reasons to stay within a tire manufacturer's recommended rim-width range, but these points provide a practical starting point before purchasing a wheel-and-tire combination.
