A wheel can bolt on perfectly and still rub the upper control arm at full lock, stick out past the fender into your state's coverage laws, or throw off your speedometer once the bigger tire goes on. The four numbers that decide if a wheel fits

  1. Bolt pattern — lug count × bolt circle diameter (like 6x5.5″ or 6x139.7mm). This has to match exactly or the wheel won't bolt on at all. Full charts and measuring instructions are in the bolt pattern guide.
  2. Diameter — the wheel size in inches (17″, 20″, 22″). Bigger wheels mean shorter tire sidewalls at the same overall tire diameter, which trades off-road compliance for street looks. Off-road builds usually favor 17″ for the extra sidewall.
  3. Width — measured bead-to-bead, and it has to suit the tire's section width. Too far apart in either direction changes how the tire carries itself — see wide wheels, narrow tires.
  4. Offset / backspacing — where the mounting face sits inside the wheel, which controls how far the wheel tucks in or pokes out. This is the number that decides rubbing, scrub radius, and fender coverage — especially on lifted trucks, where the right backspacing depends on the lift. Lift system basics covers that interaction.

Wheel FAQ

They describe the same thing from different reference points. Backspacing is the distance from the wheel's mounting face to its inner lip, measured in inches. Offset is the distance from the mounting face to the wheel's centerline, measured in millimeters — positive means tucked inward, negative means pushed outward. Off-road wheels are usually listed with both; on lifted straight-axle trucks, backspacing is the number your installer will ask for.

Usually the opposite. At the same overall tire diameter, a bigger wheel means a shorter sidewall — and sidewall is what flexes over rocks, absorbs washboard, and lets you air down for traction. That's why serious trail builds run 17″ wheels under 35″ or 37″ tires while street trucks run 22s. Choose the wheel diameter after you've chosen the tire and how you'll use it.

Aluminum (alloy) wheels are lighter, dissipate brake heat better, and offer far more styles and finishes — the right answer for most builds. Steel wheels are heavier but cheap, and they bend rather than crack on hard rock hits, which is why some dedicated trail rigs still run them. For a truck that sees pavement regularly, aluminum's lower unsprung weight wins.

Every tire has an approved rim-width range from its manufacturer — a 12.50″-wide off-road tire typically wants an 8.5–11″ wheel, with the middle of the range giving the most predictable handling and bead seating. Running outside that range stretches or pinches the tire; see wide wheels, narrow tires for what that does in practice. Almost always, yes. Your existing sensors can usually be transferred to the new wheels, or new sensors can be installed and relearned to the truck. What you shouldn't do is ignore the light — details are in our TPMS statement.
